November Train Notes Recap

POWER
Most of the rock train power we have had has been an array of Dash-8s. In balance, Q453 and Q452 have bounced some goodies.
CSX 72 (AC4400CW) - came in on V157-18 11/22, left pretty promptly
CSX 231 (AC4400CW) - came in on Q453 11/11, left the next
CSX 399 (AC4400CW) - came in on V157-18 11/22
CSX 448 (AC4400CW) - rotated on Rock train power, I think K995 brought it in
CSX 8405 (BL SD40-2) - came in on Q453 11/14, left on Q452
CSX 8585 (SD50) - came in on Q453 11/11, left 11/12 on Q452
AMTK 511 (B32-8WH) Hot of the press, came right in on P097 in a "epic" lashup
If I get recapped with more power I'll let you guys know in an addendum
FEC 711 came back in Champion colors
AMTK 189 "Big Game Train" rotated in and out

Unit Trains
I think it's this month a K962-K961 ran
K996-K995
K950-K951
K978-K977- this pair has run frequently
V157-18
and V187 I think for the FEC which its cars came in on 109 last Wednesday
N016 has been continuing to run to November, but the train in on the 29th may be the last one for a while. Last year, the unit train has dropped dead late October.

News
  • Work trains have been running on the Homestead Sub. An A033 was heard last Friday releasing Authority as far as SXH66.0, which is the end of track in Homestead. It is unknown if this ties into any hope of this part of the line coming back to service.
  • FEC has designated the AAF Station in Fort Lauderdale to be north of Broward Blvd
  • FEC has been hauling a noticeably large amount of autoracks lately, a promising sign of the economy.
  • More BMEX equipment has been coming in
  • Back to back Saturday runs of the K9** outfit have been running 11/16 and 11/23. It is possible that as a product of the startup, we could be seeing activity today 11/30 on the SXH.
  • 11/2 & 11/3, the collapse of the beams at KFLL have allowed rare one time photo ops of FEC Trains in the morning. SFL Railfans have seized the opportunity to get 101, 141, and a power move for Fort Lauderdale.
  • P092 has returned to its normal schedule
  • O720 has been noticeably returning to Hialeah faster, this could indicate a decline in demand for rock at the Mac Lead.
  • FEC trains like 101 have usually exceeded 12,000 ft meaning sooner or later we could be seeing the likes of 105 coming in December.

The Florida East Coast Railway has just announced that it will purchase twenty-four GE ES44C4s from General Electric Transportation . It sounds like the once-stubborn Shortline by the Shoreline finally listened to the pleas of its folks and fans and broke down about 55 million buckaroos to get some clean locomotives. The ES44C4s have different traction mechanisms than the popular ES44AH. This follows semi-official word from Jan 15 that the purchase was to be green-lighted. Many folks are had upset that the railroad is no longer a virgin to GE, and are puzzled that they are getting more engines than they need. It needs to be remembered that as it is, the railroad is power short. Plus, the SD70M-2s, which had left the company in dissatisfaction are going to be handed back to EMD soon. REBRAND!

It's been four years since I used this platform. The rails are rusty on my blogosphere, but I feel that it is time to put some shine and share my perspectives in the model railroading, railfanning, aviation, and LEGO hobbies.  A lot has changed. I have taken up model railroading more seriously than in the past. My railfanning has expanded greatly. The recent pandemic has encouraged me to go out and document local railroading with a vengeance, like never before. With that, there are certain aspects picked up that will be reflected through an in-progress model train layout and shared on this outlet. Sit back and enjoy. There is certainly more to come.

The "Model Train of the Year"... or something like that...

Time Magazine has its Person of the Year, therefore we shall have the Model Train of the Year. Their choice of PotY is always characteristic of that person's impact on the year's events. In 2023, the choice was surely clear. For us, when evaluating the various model railroad projects I've taken on at my leisure, the choice couldn't be clearer.  Since 2019, ECHOES, the East Coast HO Exhibitors Society, has displayed at Pinecrest Gardens on a new, sweet, extended arrangement for their holiday-themed Nights of Lights festival. Gone was the short opening weekend stint that usually happened on the second weekend of December. Our display time and scope swelled up like a sweet tooth only would during the Holidays into a three week affair. The two end-loops with five lucky 2'x4' modules turned into a much more appreciable fraction of our maximum possible footprint.
