Events Until the Holidays

The Holiday Season is fast approaching, and since I am writing with relation to my YouTube channel, I'm thinking it would help to highlight some key activities and events happening around that I may participate in.

This is my first year in the University so there are finals in the way; a huge inconvenience and something to accustom to, but something I can work with. It will be interesting to have that extra week off though after finals.

  • Aviation Planespotting at Miami International Airport, Wed. Nov. 27, 2013 - after the two classes that would matter for the day, I'll be watching MIA ops up until Sundown
  • A Day of Railfanning Toys for Tots Train Chase - Tentative - Sat., Dec. 14, 2013. This item will be discussed most likely at a little meeting/getty with the other railfans, it has happened in the past, so that's why I put it in the calendar. If I can't chase it with them for whatever reason, I'll probably catch it locally like done in 2011 (a GRAND way to end the semester either way)
  • (GFLUG) LEGO Train Display @ Golden Spike Tampa Train Show, Sat. Dec. 21, 2013-Sun. Dec. 22, 2013 - GFLUG display. Element may make it to the show. Participation in the actual layout is contingent upon me doing both days. I highly recommend you guys make this show at the FL State Fairgrounds, it's usually a true showcase of GFLUG's projects and workings. It's also near the two train yards in the event there is some action.
  • Aviation Planespotting - Select days throughout Winter Break
  • A Day of Railfanning - Various trips with or without SFRM select days in Winter Break
  • A Day of Railfanning Ringling Brothers-Barnum/Bailey Circus Train, TBA Jan. 2014 - Pending item. Academics may get in the way of a full trip if NOT on a weekend but my schedule should, if it runs on a weekday, allow for a catch close to home. Last year it was on a Sunday and was a Grade A Cluster----.
  • Aviation Florida Av. Photographers Miami Int'l Ramp Tour - A repeat of last year, except hopefully in better weather conditions. Fri, Jan. 17, 2014. 
Off the beaten path but worth mentioning:
  • (GFLUG) LEGO Train Display @ Plant City Train Show - Sat, Feb. 15, 2014 - Smaller display, I'll be showcasing my massive PC Depot. Expansions to the work to include the south side viewing platform are possible. It's the 3rd Saturday which means there will be a car show, and it's on a Holiday weekend (not for me)
  • Florida Citrus Model Train Society Train Show - TBA 2014 - An outlet for me to get involved in the railroading hobby at a local level.

The Florida East Coast Railway has just announced that it will purchase twenty-four GE ES44C4s from General Electric Transportation . It sounds like the once-stubborn Shortline by the Shoreline finally listened to the pleas of its folks and fans and broke down about 55 million buckaroos to get some clean locomotives. The ES44C4s have different traction mechanisms than the popular ES44AH. This follows semi-official word from Jan 15 that the purchase was to be green-lighted. Many folks are had upset that the railroad is no longer a virgin to GE, and are puzzled that they are getting more engines than they need. It needs to be remembered that as it is, the railroad is power short. Plus, the SD70M-2s, which had left the company in dissatisfaction are going to be handed back to EMD soon. REBRAND!

It's been four years since I used this platform. The rails are rusty on my blogosphere, but I feel that it is time to put some shine and share my perspectives in the model railroading, railfanning, aviation, and LEGO hobbies.  A lot has changed. I have taken up model railroading more seriously than in the past. My railfanning has expanded greatly. The recent pandemic has encouraged me to go out and document local railroading with a vengeance, like never before. With that, there are certain aspects picked up that will be reflected through an in-progress model train layout and shared on this outlet. Sit back and enjoy. There is certainly more to come.

The "Model Train of the Year"... or something like that...

Time Magazine has its Person of the Year, therefore we shall have the Model Train of the Year. Their choice of PotY is always characteristic of that person's impact on the year's events. In 2023, the choice was surely clear. For us, when evaluating the various model railroad projects I've taken on at my leisure, the choice couldn't be clearer.  Since 2019, ECHOES, the East Coast HO Exhibitors Society, has displayed at Pinecrest Gardens on a new, sweet, extended arrangement for their holiday-themed Nights of Lights festival. Gone was the short opening weekend stint that usually happened on the second weekend of December. Our display time and scope swelled up like a sweet tooth only would during the Holidays into a three week affair. The two end-loops with five lucky 2'x4' modules turned into a much more appreciable fraction of our maximum possible footprint.
